The ‘Scandi Chic Kitchen’ in Brighton
Anna Newton is a woman whose sophisticated and elegant everyday style inspires hundreds of thousands of people daily; an individual who is expert at choosing and curating beautiful things – from clothes, to beauty products, restaurants, holiday destinations and more. A tastemaker, Anna’s job is to seek out, edit and curate lifestyle tips for those who share her aesthetic, to distill the overwhelming amount of choice there is out there. Of course it was an honour to be asked to create the new kitchen for her family, a lovely endorsement from someone we admire greatly.
Since launching in 2010, Anna Newton – the discerning eye behind the lifestyle platform The Anna Edit – has built a loyal following across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Substack. Here she shares advice, creates and curates looks, lists and recommendations – a place she says for ‘minimal style lovers’. A Sunday Times bestselling author thanks to her 2019 book ‘An Edited Life: Simple Steps to Streamlining Your Life, at Work and at Home’, it is of course entirely fitting that Anna’s family home follows the same aesthetic.
When we had our first meeting with Anna and her husband Mark, they had a clear vision for their kitchen. Speaking to Ideal Home magazine they explained “We love a bit of Scandi chic…spaces that feel really quiet and calm, but with warm and cosy features too. We realised that it was always wooden kitchens we were drawn to. They felt warm and homely but classic at the same time.”
We sourced beautiful Sweet Chestnut wood veneers for this project. As with all our cupboard and draw fronts the veneers are expertly hand arranged by our cabinet makers – achieving a balance of enhancing the stunning grain pattern without allowing the intervention of human hand to dominate…it is a real art. One of the many wonderful things about this kitchen is that the natural beauty of the Sweet Chestnut can really be appreciated; the undulating, delicate grain, the soft tones of the wood – golden, delicate, gentle colours. It is an example of why committing to just one wood works so well; why keeping your palette simple will create a serene feel to a room.
Along with the Sweet Chestnut, another major material is the floor, the mottled, cloud grey of the polished concrete contrasts with the timber, a little industrial feel to juxtapose with the wood’s organic, tactile texture. Meanwhile, the walls are ivory, a neutral backdrop for the wood that bounces natural light around the space. The recessed handles have brass backs, a little glint, that will develop a characterful patina over time.
The layout of this room is guided by the huge windows onto the established garden with its gorgeous Victorian flint walls, of the local Sussex vernacular. As with any family kitchen, storage is sanity (!) so there’s plenty here including a tall larder cupboard.
The new kitchen is a “real hub for everyone. We all seem to congregate here when friends and family are over and there’s plenty of room for our little one to play while we make dinner or tidy up”. We’ve heard sunsets are particularly special at the end of a busy day with the kitchen enjoying views of the glorious garden designed by Fern & Pine and landscaped by Ali Walker…dreamy!
