The Harpenden Family Kitchen
Featured in Homes & Gardens, House & Garden and House Beautiful magazines this kitchen has received an awful lot of appreciation and deservedly so. For the latter publication our clients were interviewed about the renovation and they explained why their ‘kitchen finally works for modern family life’…

BEAUTIFUL TONES
The ‘before and after’ photos of this kitchen demonstrate wonderfully the positive impact considered colour can have, from white walls and cupboards to rich hues, the character of the space is transformed. ‘The aim was to create a room that felt bright, warm and airy but still calm to live with. Pluck’s colour selection fitted perfectly, with beautiful tones that didn’t overwhelm the space’ says our client. With a job in the fine art world, coming into contact with some of the most sought after paintings in the world, our client’s innate understanding of colour theory is plain to see here – there are some gorgeous combinations.

THE HEART OF THE HOME
The changes to the layout were described thus ‘We were keen to have a more open-plan layout that would allow us to cook, eat and gather in the same place. The kitchen connects to a sitting area and playroom, making it the heart of our home’.

For our clients, a kitchen island was part of this too, symbolising a piece of furniture that unites people, with memories of their own happy childhood in America providing inspiration, ‘I grew up with a big kitchen island in my parents home and I wanted the same kind of gathering place for our family.’ The yellow island radiates from the centre of the room, the sun around which everything else orbits!

BESPOKE FURNITURE
Another opportunity seized was the chance to improve storage for the stuff of family life, so we not only created the kitchen but also ‘a bespoke bench seat and bookcase in the playroom’, the hallway too has custom Pluck furniture throughout. The wonderful stained glass front door is a nod to the designs of architect and polymath Frank Lloyd Wright, who hails from the same part of Wisconsin.

Back to the kitchen, where we want to take a moment to talk about the glazed cabinets! There are two different designs here; a run along the back wall of the kitchen, where a Ruskin Blossom interior is framed by Elm wood. Whilst the same wood and colour combination is used for a cupboard that is nestled under the stairs, a dead space becomes an area suffused.
