Step through the painted black doors of this cool, canal-side warehouse and you are immersed, enveloped, hugged by a cosy interiors emporium – colour, pattern, texture, lighting, layers of luscious fabric, tiles and samples to explore. The Mix is home to 10 British design-led brands, curated by handmade tiles specialists Bert & May, here’s who you will find there…

We were thrilled to create a kitchen for The Mix. It’s  an industrial interior – raw and rough at the edges – so we wanted to juxtapose this with some really rich and warm colours and wood. We took inspiration from traditional members’ clubs with oak panelling, leather Chesterfields, and brooding hues. Our palette combines Aubergine and London Plane wood with a little Brockwell Moss for the interior of the glazed cupboard. Sitting in the fore is a Turnmill Prep Table in British oak. The worktops are a Lundhs stone with beautiful moments of iridescent blue in the flecked texture and an ogee curved upstand behind the Whitebirk sink. 

The collaborative nature of The Mix, a place to show how these interior brands can work together in a home, is evident throughout our design.  Armac Martin crafted bespoke brass handle backs to match their shelf brackets. Whilst Curiousa created lighting from their hand-blown glass and porcelain collections. Bert & May’s tiles decorate the walls here and in the adjacent pantry, where we introduced a little pop of colour with Market Mustard cupboards. This is combined with a solid Cherry wood worktop and shelves to match above. Whilst a Farrow & Ball’s blue forms the backdrop for an Ash plate rack and London Plane hooks.

Founded in 1929, Armac Martin is a fourth-generation family business that designs and crafts solid brass hardware and accessories. The company’s products are designed in-house and produced in its Birmingham factory, where every piece is finished by hand. Armac Martin’s luxurious range of handles, knobs and interior fittings are supplied to homes across the globe. Founded by Lee Thornley, Bert & May are known for their handmade artisan tiles in curated colours and designs, both new and reclaimed. The seed was sown for the company whilst Lee was building a boutique hotel in Spain, he found he had a natural talent for sourcing reclaimed materials and shortly after started importing reclaimed tiles to the UK to sell. Alongside The Mix in East London they also have a showroom in Chelsea and York. 

The Mix is the brainchild of Bert & May founder Lee Thornley.

Brock Home is a ceramics studio based in North Yorkshire. Designed for everyday life, the pieces are centred on “robust tableware with quiet character, shaped with intention and made to elevate the simple rituals of daily living”. Founded by Ottoline de Vries, Ottoline is a London-based design house famed for its playful fabrics and wallpapers (a mix of which is available to see at The Mix). Her work has won awards and captured the imagination of interior designers and homeowners worldwide. Every design starts as a hand-drawn creation in Ottoline’s London studio and is realised through collaborations with skilled weavers and printers. The fabrics are carefully woven and printed in England on natural, high-quality materials, while wallpapers are crafted with partners in both England and the Netherlands – ‘All with a shared dedication to craftsmanship, sustainability and lasting beauty’ explains founder Ottoline.

After struggling to find stair runners that combined both beauty and inspiration for her own home, Sophie Cooney spotted a gap in the market and so Sophie Cooney Runners came to be! Founded in 2014, the brand is the original creator of luxury, contemporary flatweave rugs specifically for stairs. Each piece is handwoven using ethically sourced wool, cotton and jute whilst the designs focus on colour and pattern.

Thomas Crapper & Co was established in 1861 and is known for its British-made sanitaryware, including traditional Victorian-style toilets, basins and accessories, all made with a focus on craftsmanship and longevity. Today, the brand continues to draw on its heritage while combining traditional and modern manufacturing techniques. At The Mix you’ll discover some of their iconic colourful cisterns.

The Water Monopoly is a London-based specialist in antique and reproduction bathroom fixtures and fittings.  Founded by Justin Homewood in 1990, the business began with restoring period baths, basins, and toilets and later expanded into producing high-quality designs inspired by historic pieces. Known for combining traditional craftsmanship with modern plumbing standards, the company supplies luxury bathrooms for homes and commercial projects worldwide. Their Rockwell Bath, a curvy design in blush pink, sits proudly at The Mix.

Whitebirk Sink Company is the last British-owned maker of traditional fireclay sinks, all crafted by hand in Lancashire. Alongside its classical offering, it has Kréte, a modern collection which “proves that concrete can be as refined and expressive as any luxury material. Each basin is designed to explore sculptural shapes, soft textures, and bold, contemporary colour.” A selection of both its fireclay and concrete sinks is on display in The Mix, including in our kitchen and pantry.
