A Duo of Divine Cape Town Interiors

Dominic Touwen's Dining Room in Cape Town
Take a moment to enjoy two beautiful homes in Cape Town. The bright southern hemisphere sunshine gives these spaces a glow, no gloomy corners here, wall colour is iridescent. These homes are created and curated by two incredibly talented individuals, learn a little about them and it makes absolute sense that this is how they live….

Our home-from-home in Cape Town is chez Dominic Touwen, my brother-in-law. Dom is an interior and landscape designer and is responsible for many breathtaking projects including La Cotte Farm, which transformed acres of neglected vineyards, derelict land and a Cape Dutch farmstead into a beautiful hotel and country retreat in the heart of Franschoek.
For two decades he has lived in the Bo-Kaap, the historical centre of Cape Malay culture in the Cape Town, known for its streets of colourful houses and vibrant atmosphere. The most warm and welcoming host, Dom’s home strikes that balance between there being beauty everywhere, without any sense of the place being overly precious and formal…walls are wonky, paintings skew, the most beautiful ceramics are casually displayed.
An auction aficionado and intrepid traveller, he has collected treasures and curiosities over the years, as well as championing the work of contemporary local artists too. Here is a little peek into a home that isn’t usually open to the public, but with Dom’s blessing I can share.
Meanwhile, a few streets away in the Bo-Kaap neighbourhood is Chandler House with a motto ‘home is where the art is’ Dom’s good friend – artist and creative – Michael Chandler, founded his shop and studio here. It’s a place he says ‘where local heritage meets contemporary design’, a curious, beguiling treasure trove, where every surface is filled with something interesting.

On the day I visited a painter was in the middle of a still life, there were fascinating people to chat to and Michael’s home – with a living room quite recently painted a glorious shade of pink – was looking fabulous.
Perhaps it’s the sun, or is it the sea, maybe it’s the mountains but creative spirits seem to thrive in Cape Town!
