A Reimagined Mid-Century Kitchen in House Beautiful Magazine
It never fails to delight seeing a Pluck kitchen in print – a moment for our clients to celebrate the kitchen they have created, that we are of course immensely honoured to have been a part of. These spaces are passion projects, along with all the decisions to be made, financial investment, it is an emotional process renovating your home – you want the very best outcome and there is ordinary life to be lived alongside it all.
This particular House Beautiful feature takes us to a townhouse nestled within the leafy Dulwich Estate in South London. In the interview our clients chat Cherry wood, last minute panics and how they created their perfect pink utility.
ALL IN THE PLANNING
Homeowners Isabelle and Llewelyn worked with architects Studio Cherry to rework the ground floor layout, combining the dining room and kitchen and expanding the utility room into the garage.
At the top of the couple’s wishlist was a cosy corner bench overlooking their garden and the surrounding woodland, along with a large kitchen island. “We were adamant that our hob be on the island and that the kitchen sink faced the wall,” says Isabelle. “If people are round and sitting on the island stools, it’s more sociable.”
“Pluck steered us towards cherry wood, which you don’t see used that often in its kitchens, but it works beautifully with the original teak floor, it will only look richer with time,” Isabelle says. “I wanted cherry wood units against the white wall but to keep the island white, as I felt that would look lighter in the room.”
THE DETAILS
The renovation wasn’t without its eleventh-hour panics. “I had a last-minute realisation that we had nowhere to put glasses or mugs,” Isabelle recalls. “We had one shelf above the splashback that was intended to be purely decorative.” To solve the dilemma, we designed a tall cherry cupboard to sit beside the window seating. “I don’t know what we would have done otherwise,” she adds.
They also created a utility room behind the kitchen. Isabelle wanted a “room large enough to hang all of our drying laundry, including a ceiling-pulley clothes airer so we could hang sheets.” And so this practical pink space came to be.
“We are thrilled with the results’ Isabelle says, ‘Before we only used this space to cook, but now we spend so much time here’. We also hear rumours that the bespoke cat flap is a hit!
