The First Floor Kitchen in Highgate

This pretty kitchen is an oasis of calm amidst a bustling part of London. The benefits of the first floor location are immediate as you walk into the room, looking out onto the beautiful architecture of the grand Victorian houses opposite, through a canopy of trees that line this leafy street.

It is a joy creating a kitchen for a space like this, nestling a design into the bones of an old room. As with any small kitchen every spot counts, incorporating maximum storage was a priority, though the goal is not to cram in as many cupboards as possible and so compromise the airy feeling of this space!

Our design is asymmetrical, floor to ceiling cupboards on one side, a lower run opposite, that ends with tall cupboards housing the oven and the all important wine fridge! Indeed, this kitchen’s appliances are such a good example of how cleverly thought through kit is key to a successful design – a big free-standing fridge-freezer was a must have for this young family, whilst the compact Bora model is perfect for their cooking needs and so handy when there is limited worktop space.

The central island and table configuration – an entirely custom piece, means there is a place to eat in this kitchen, somewhere the children can sit whilst the adults prepare food and cook. Small in size, it plays a subtle but large part in bringing the family together.

The room’s palette is key to the serene feel, the two tone cabinetry combining the delicate pale pink of Ruskin Blossom with Half Moon White above gives a lightness to the design. Whilst limiting the colours in the space is so effective at adding a touch of sophisticated simplicity.

Finally, can you spot the television?! Our creative clients have managed to make their gogglebox look lovely thanks to artfully arranged stationery!
