A Vibrant Kitchen in rural North Wales

This kitchen is part of a true passion project. A couple relocating their family from East London to rural Wales, had fallen head over heels for this slightly crazy, characterful house. When interviewed by Ideal Home magazine about the renovation, they explained ‘the front of the property dates back to the 1870s, while the back of the house was built in the 1700s. The kitchen was unfortunately tucked away from the living spaces and we wanted to connect it’.

Enlisting the expertise of local practice Paterson Macaulay & Owens Architects, an extension was designed, so the kitchen could be located in a naturally unifying position in relation to the house, a room to be drawn to. There was a clear wishlist for the kitchen, elements that helped inform the layout:

A dedicated coffee area includes a mini-sink with handy shelves above, worktop for the machine and also a fridge beneath that – professional barista level coffees are made here!

A large central island ticks all the boxes that a good island should – storage, including a pleasing symmetrical drawers at the front, ample worktop (important for bread baking!), a spot to sit and an orientation that means whoever is prepping food and cooking can face out to be involved in the rest of the room.

Custom curved banquette seating creates a cosy corner for relaxed eating. Whilst a slightly awkward nook becomes dedicated food storage tailored to the contours of the room – no space wasted, maximum storage achieved and the fluted glass glows when the lights are on.

And now to the palette!! Inspired by the greens of the countryside around them, Ferndale, a fresh, vibrant green is the main colour. The complementary pinks are used to subtly zone the kitchen, with Ritzy for the island and banquette and Ruskin Blossom for surrounding cupboards. The two different worktops – quartz for the island and stainless steel elsewhere also do this. The wood throughout is London Plane as ‘it has an incredible grain and is a nod to our time in the city’.

‘Our kitchen isn’t for everyone but we wanted to be bold. And Pluck’s palette helped us be braver than we thought we ever could be’ Ultimately, the couple say ‘we wanted a kitchen that married beauty with functionality’ and that has most definitely been achieved.

We have documented this wonderful kitchen’s genesis, from inspiration and design, to making, install and now as the lived in and loved focal point of this family home. The story can be found here with more information about how we will design your kitchen.
