The Suffolk Cottage Kitchen

Set in bucolic rural Suffolk, MW Architects undertook the mindful renovation of this historic cottage ‘focusing on major environmental upgrades while retaining its character and connection to the landscape’. The work included a sensitive reimagining of the kitchen and dining room with a design that strikes the balance between respect for the old bones of the cottage, whilst creating a simple, modern and cosy space for the owners.

Explain MW Architectsto address a previously cold, single-glazed elevation and a lack of natural light. The new, more generous kitchen connects seamlessly to the dining area, anchored by a striking glass-to-glass corner window that frames views of the landscape and the expansive Suffolk skies’.

We had the delight of creating the kitchen for this newly reconfigured room. The proportions of the space, with low cottage ceilings, dictated the design. As ever with smaller kitchens, we had to cleverly eke out as much storage as possible. Whilst incorporating a wobbly beam or two, we tailored extra small wall cupboards, including dinky glazed cabinets. Spot the slimline double doored larder too!

A peninsula separates the kitchen from the dining area whilst also providing an additional worktop and means the glorious meadow views through the corner window can be enjoyed by whoever is in the kitchen. These views are framed with bespoke (perpendicular!) curtains by Polly Granville, who also made the floral blinds for the Accoya replacement sash windows.

The cupboards in this kitchen are Eccles, a soft cashmere or beige, from Pluck’s Core Colour collection. The frame of the glazed cabinets is solid oak, which is picked up in the back of the recessed handles. This creates a subtle visual connection between the lower and upper run of cupboards. The Staffordshire red clay quarry tiles by Ketley give the floor a warm, irregular, terracotta tone and a traditional feel, juxtaposed with the contemporary horizontal stripe of the Claybrook splashback tiles.

A practically perfect petite kitchen for contemporary cottage life!
