The Family Kitchen in East London
This kitchen feels like a patchwork quilt, a stitching together of colours and textures to create a cosy room. Our cabinetry is designed to fit snugly into the contours of the space, a room that includes a lot for its size – the kitchen area, a dining table, seating at the island, an electronic piano, soft seating with garden views – it’s a busy family kitchen with space used efficiently. We’ve been reliably informed the banquette seating with storage is full of toys and games!
Having already worked with our clients on their garden room, the talented KiLN Architects were drafted back in to design an infill extension and create a ‘more connected kitchen, living and dining space with better views and improved access to a special garden’ – ‘special’ as our client is a garden designer! The room now has an abundance of natural light and is a sociable space for modern family living.
KiLN included a lovely nod to the history of this Grade II listed 1830s terrace, by cleverly incorporating existing original Victorian wooden panelling into their design. The old wood has a lovely patina and character.
Our design includes three colours – Hollingbourne Yellow with two pinks – Ritzy and Ruskin Blossom. We were delighted to hear our clients particularly enjoyed choosing the colours with our design team. The wood is London Plane with its beautiful speckled grain.
The use of two different worktops, matt, sleek slimline steel and glossy, polished natural stone adds to the playful nature of this room. It also separates the island and the back run of cupboards, zoning the sink and cooking area. The large offcuts from the stone were used for the table top and the shelf running around the banquette seating, an important spot for the Lego Hogwarts!
