Sustainability
We consider sustainability at every step of production and beyond. Often that means putting the environmental impact of something above economic considerations, but we think the pay off is worth it. Our description of Pluck kitchens as ‘consciously crafted’ is due to the careful consideration of all the ingredients that go into making our cabinetry and furniture and more…
The Materials We Use…
Our Colours
We curated Eco Colours, eight carbon neutral matt hues, that are a new generation of sustainable surface materials.
Our Core Colour collection are high pressure laminates sourced from companies that have comprehensive environmental policies in place.
Birch Plywood
When you open your doors and drawers you will see that our carcasses are made from birch plywood. We only use high grade birch plywood that is FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC™ (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified. By choosing to use birch plywood we are consciously shunning other, cheaper and less environmentally friendly sheet material, such as MDF and chipboard, for our carcasses.
NB Birch trees are fast growing timber and native to northern Europe, where they grow in abundance in sustainably managed forests.
Timber
All the wood – solid or veneers – we use in our furniture is sustainably sourced, FSC® or PEFC™ rated, but nowadays this will be the case for most reputable kitchen companies!
Finishes
The protective sealants we use on our woods are either natural oils that are suitable for children’s toys or a non-toxic water based lacquer.
Hardware
We know that not everyone will be able to get excited about hardware – a fascination with hinges and drawer runners is probably a niche interest! We have sourced hardware brands of the highest quality that are engineered to last; these are not flimsy, disposable pieces but a serious bit of small kit that you will enjoy using every day. The companies we source from are ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certified, meaning they have internationally recognised Environmental and Energy Management Systems in place.
How We Make Our Kitchens…
The Design
With a 25 year warranty, our cabinetry and furniture is designed to last, but should damage occur our cabinets are designed so individual elements can be remade and replaced.
Workshop Waste
We developed systems to minimise the waste produced during manufacture and have adapted our designs to do this – for example tweaking dimensions to work with the size of a birch plywood sheet. This means the materials left over after a kitchen is made are minimal and we create offcut sizes that can be incorporated into future projects. We also have relationships with local colleges and save offcuts for their design students. We have seen some fabulous products made from these by emerging talents!
Ethical Energy
In 2020, we switched Pluck HQ’s energy supplier to an ethical provider. This is significant because it is not just our design studio, but also our workshop and production facility, so we have big bills.
Wood Veneers
We use wood veneers on our cupboard and drawer fronts, as opposed to solid wood doors, because this reduces the amount of hardwood used, without compromising the natural beauty of the timber. We press the veneers onto birch plywood in-house using non-toxic, VOC-free, water based glues.

The Pluck Brochure
Wary about adding more printed materials to this world, we work with the brilliant Generation Press, a B Corp and winner of Printweek’s Environmental Printers of the Year 2023 (along with several other environmental accolades). You can order your free print or digital brochure here.
Sample Boxes
Our sample boxes are recyclable and the postcards are also printed by Generation Press.
Packaging
All our packaging is made from recycled materials and is recyclable. For kitchens we install, we have made reusable crates, which are returned to Pluck HQ and used time and time again!
Electric Van
On the topic of delivery, we have an electric van for installation.
