Prep Tables and The Cook’s Table
Pluck tables are a central piece of furniture in a kitchen’s layout, providing an additional outward facing worktop along with a little extra storage too. Ergonomically they should be a comfortable height for standing, the perfect place for food preparation, baking, kneading, whipping, glazing…
Every table is handcrafted to order so sizes are customisable. The solid timber frames are available in Oak or Cherry and depending on availability, other woods too; where applicable, colours can be chosen from our collections. For the top, any material that is appropriate for a worktop is wonderful, our design team will of course advise.
Prep Tables
The Turnmill Prep Table
Inspired by a 19th century French farmhouse table, the Turnmill Prep Table has refined proportions and a pretty fluted leg detail. The example here is made from solid British Oak that has a rich golden tone. The top is Norwegian Larvikite stone from Gerald Culliford, the coarse grain pattern is like daubs of a paintbrush, a mottled effect which mixes greys and black with an iridescent blue.
The Larkhall Prep Table
We drew inspiration from historic ‘below stairs’ kitchen tables for the Larkhall Prep Table – a utilitarian design, made with beautiful timber using traditional carpentry techniques. The elegant and sturdy silhouette includes the contours of the joints, the intention to celebrate the skilled woodwork involved. The timber comes to our workshop ‘rough sawn’, meaning as our cabinet makers plane the wood, they expose the grain pattern and select the choice pieces for the table.
The Elfindale Prep Table
The most contemporary design of our trio, the Elfindale Prep Table, has a simple form. The lower shelf is solid wood or slatted planks and is handy storage for bulkier items. Drawers are optional. but we would really recommend them. It’s such a good spot for utensils and cutlery, or the drawer of everything (rubber bands, safety pins, paper clips, twine, random keys).
Kitchen Islands vs Central Tables
There is a debate amongst kitchen and interior aficionados over which is better as a central piece of kitchen furniture – an island or table. In reality the two perform fairly similar functions. Due to their smaller size, a prep table will not be able to do all the things an island can, but it will be a lighter piece of furniture. The Cook’s Table can incorporate more storage, as well as appliances. Really, which is suitable for your kitchen, comes down to personal preference, the space available and your priorities for the room.
The Cook’s Table
A central piece of furniture for capacious kitchens, redolent of historic kitchen furniture. This table has lots of storage, a generous worktop for food prep and display and can also include appliances and sockets. The Cook’s Table gives the impression of being freestanding, yet it is likely rooted in position due to power points, drainage or extraction systems.
The example here is made of oak and incorporates a hob with integrated downdraft extraction, six large drawers and a lower shelf. The worktop is quartz, but we can source any practical material.
