The Vivid Kitchen in Elephant and Castle
Yard Architects call this project ‘Vivid House’ a visceral description for a home that is suffused with colour and dazzling design. Our wonderful clients, described by Yard as ‘bold and creative’ were renovating their Grade II listed Georgian townhouse in South London and ‘had set their sights on a fun and colourful home for their young family…[with a] strong belief in the positive psychological effect of surrounding yourself with colour to aid happiness’ We were delighted to be a part of this happy vision.
Our design includes a bespoke acid yellow island, a wall of Milton Blue – a chalky sky blue – cupboards and opposite the soft pink of Ruskin Blossom. Once the Pluck colours were established the palette for the rest of the room was decided, with pale pink walls, ultramarine blue for the glazing and tap (!) along with pops of yellow.
This kitchen is in a basement and Yard Architects ‘wanted to increase natural daylight as much as possible’ a lightwell runs along one side of the space, whilst a wall of glass connects the room to the courtyard garden. Next to these windows is a bench we designed with an oak exterior and graphically patterned upholstery by Kirsty Kissell Furnishings.
A terrazzo from In Opera Group, with subtle cool tones, graces the worktops, splash backs and also areas of the floor – framing the cabinetry footprint, chunky lines drawn in soft speckles, a joyful detail by the Yard team.
Entry to the kitchen is through a dramatic arch and this is a clever device to conceal a staircase. To create a cohesive language in the room Yard Architects explain ‘the arched profile was repeated throughout the scheme, from large scale interventions through to small scale detailing’. Indeed, the asymmetric island has curves too.
It’s easy to imagine this kitchen in riotous family life mode, a joyful place where food and love is shared!
