The Isle of Skye Kitchen

This beautiful kitchen sits in the heart of a home recently built in a very special location. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery on the Isle of Skye in the Highlands of Scotland, where nature is at its finest and most nourishing, but at times harsh too, this cosy, colourful space is a cocoon from whatever the elements are doing outside.

Our clients were first drawn to Pluck through our use of colour and having had a traditional Shaker kitchen in their previous house, they wanted to explore other options here. The size of this kitchen, the double height ceiling, the incredible natural light and the ever changing drama of the Hebridean vistas mean this space can include bold hues without being dominated and defined by them.

There are four Pluck colours used in this design – coral pink Ritzy, rich Hollingbourne Yellow, soft Railton grey with pale pink Ruskin Blossom in the interior of the fluted glass London Plane cabinet. The arrangement of colour is used to zone different areas of the kitchen and means the cupboards, and peninsula feel like individual pieces of furniture.

This impression is further enhanced by the contrasting worktops; the peninsula has stunning sustainably sourced Ash from Scottish Wood, whilst local company Skye Stone Studio made the bespoke terrazzo worktops on the run behind. The terracotta undertones of the latter are picked up in the splashback’s tiles which are by fabric designer Neisha Crossland for Fired Earth.

Adjacent to the kitchen is a utility which radiates yellow, who knew getting a broom out could be such a positive, sunny experience!

The overall impression of this kitchen is of a joyful and welcoming space, and it is a sum of parts, so many carefully considered elements which contribute to this homely feel  – the window seat nook, the Setting Plaster wall, the combination of textures and finishes, the shelves brimming with books, the armchair, the mugs on hooks made by local potter Lenz Ceramics and of course the Pluck colours…everywhere you look there are little visual treats to enjoy, layers and touches that make this a kitchen feel so very lovely.
