The Family Kitchen in Finchley
Set in a 1930s house this kitchen is for a family of four, busy parents with big jobs who want the reassurance of their young children playing within eyesight as they cook up feasts. They love to host, including Shabbat dinners for family and friends; this is a space to unite people together to enjoy fabulous company and delicious food.
Our clients worked with Iguana Architects to reimagine their home. The design included a rear extension, with a brief to avoid a ‘box like’ feel to the room. Hence, the zig-zag wall of windows, a creative response which inspired the architect’s name for the project ‘Not Just Another Box’!
Visually the kitchen’s layout is balanced, almost symmetrical. Above the island, the back wall includes tall Brockwell Moss cupboards, fluted glass cabinets and London Plane shelves, a combination of textures and layers, that brings character to the design.
The island has a Bora hob with integrated extraction, removing the need for any bulky overhead business. The design includes Brockwell Moss on the inside face and London Plane on the outer face.
The stunning, speckled grain of the wood (veneers we expertly hand arrange) has the chance to shine here, the warm tones and beautiful pattern uninterrupted by seating.
Our clients worked with Iguana Interiors, the architects’ interior design studio, on the palette and there are small details that are lovely. One example is the use of brass, lux glints in the handles, the tap, sockets and the elegant Bert Frank pendant. These accents add a touch of glamour to this kitchen and feel fitting for the art deco era of the house.
As with most family kitchens, maximum storage was key in this design, so not only is there ample space for the usual kitchen kit and ingredients, there are also cupboards for children’s arts and crafts activities and toys. Our client had fun with their larder, a soft Ruskin Blossom interior to be enjoyed upon opening the doors and look at the beautifully arranged consumables – a joy to behold!
