Bespoke Kitchen Design
In the very literal sense of the word ‘bespoke’, like a Saville Row tailor, we make all our cabinetry and furniture to order in our South London workshop; and to continue with the tailor analogy (indulge us!) whilst we design a kitchen, we measure, tweak and adapt our cabinetry and furniture for a space, in the same way a tailor will fit clothing to their client’s contours. Here are some of the elements we consider…
The Kitchen Layout
The flow of a kitchen, the natural way in which people will move around the room is in a large part dictated by the architecture of the space. The location of windows, doors and chimney breasts and the shape of the room guide where cabinetry and furniture should be. If you are building a new extension you will of course be involved in creating the fabric of the building and we can work closely with your architect to design the most ergonomic and welcoming kitchen layout.
The view of the room when you walk in, or sit at the dining table, the space between furniture – having enough room to open cupboard doors, whether you want a central piece of furniture like an island, or Prep or Work Table – all this also influences the layout.
Working with you, the goal for our design team is to create a layout that makes sense, so your new kitchen feels right for the room and for how you wish to use the space.
This is part of the joy of bespoke kitchen design as we’re not limited to fitting predetermined cupboards into your room, we tailor the design to work with the space, meaning a cohesiveness is achieved. There may well be compromises along the way, however, resolving these is part of the thrill of the design process, finding solutions for you.

Kitchen Storage – The Basics
The basic building blocks of kitchen storage are cupboards, drawers and shelves and we have a library of designs that we will draw upon to practically furnish your space with. To achieve the pared back, uncluttered style of our cabinetry and furniture every element has been meticulously considered. Our distinctive flat fronted doors have a simple elegance, the proportions are not incidental. Our cupboards are designed to form a beautiful backdrop for a room.
Our design team will work with you to understand what storage you require, exploring things like, where you want your pans and other cookware to be stored; is wall cabinetry useful; how much crockery you have; do you have collections of ceramics to display, are you already swooning over a larder; how many drawers do you need…is it essential for everyone to have the-everything-drawer, a handy repository for rubber bands, sticky tape, matches, loose buttons and the odd marble…
What goes on inside the cupboards and drawers is important too, shelf height and depth, internal drawer designs, cutlery and utensil inserts, plus because we use high grade birch plywood for our carcasses it means our cupboards have a lovely woody interior.
Beyond the basic cupboards and drawers, worksurfaces and more, we have the flourishes – larders, glazed cabinets, Prep Tables vs islands and our custom dressers. Indeed, should you have freestanding storage, an heirloom piece, or recently acquired, we can (and have) started a design with where this should sit in the room.
Kitchen Shelves
Shelves provide light, airy and easily accessible storage. Shelves also add texture and layers once filled with artworks, kitchenware, books, ceramics and any other bits and bobs or objet d’art you wish to display! Our shelving can broadly be divided into four main categories:
Floating or visible support
These shelves can vary in depth and length. They can act as a bridge between cabinetry and a room’s internal architecture or standalone on walls. Should you wish to have visible brackets, we have some lovely examples that we can show and source for you.
Integrated / Bookcase
Integrated shelving is a wonderful way to soften the transition between the edge of cabinetry and the rest of the room. We can incorporate these shelves in a variety of locations – islands, peninsulas or at the end of a tall or short run of cupboards.
Spoke
Inspired by Victorian bamboo furniture, with diagonal supporting struts and dowels that sit proud of the shelf fronts. The frame is solid Ash and the shelves are custom from our Colour Collections.
Plate racks
Our elegant and practical plate racks draw on traditional Georgian designs, tending to be a little more simple than later Victorian versions. Handmade to order in custom sizes for niche or wall are possible.

A Tailored Fit
From awkward corners to chimney breasts and a myriad of other architectural features, we know that each room we design a kitchen for will have its own individual quirks, so we tailor our cabinetry to fit these details. This means visually, a Pluck kitchen looks in harmony with its surroundings, and practically, we use space sensibly.
Not only are our kitchens tailored to the room, but also the people – the most obvious manifestation of this being the very individual choices for the layout of wood and colour (or no colour!) in your kitchen. As you will see from our Projects portfolio no two Pluck kitchens are the same, a manifestation of our belief that the heart of the home should reflect the soul of the people who live there.

Worktops
We have yet to come across a worktop that doesn’t look lovely with our cupboards, from luxurious natural stones, to contemporary terrazzo’s, sleek stainless steel and traditional wood; all look glorious as you will see from our Projects. After a decade of designing and making kitchens we have a comprehensive little black book of suppliers and worktop samples galore that we can share with you during your Design Consultation.

Appliances
Whilst we are Designing Your Kitchen we will discuss in detail the appliances that are right for your project. Your quote will include a breakdown of these and we can source them too. It’s really important to get the appliances right, you will use them everyday and no regrets are essential! Our Projects show the diversity of appliances, from traditional to contemporary styles, that work in Pluck kitchens.

Handles
The handles we make in-house are recessed and come in four shapes: square, pill, circle and rectangle. Although small in size, the internal handle colour and material can have a considerable impact on a kitchen’s scheme. Any of our woods and colours is possible, as well as an unlacquered brass finish that develops a lovely patina over time. We can source hardware too, again, we have some great companies in our little black book!
Kitchen Colours
We cannot talk about the individuality of Pluck kitchens and the bespoke nature of our designs without mentioning the creative colour and wood combinations.
The hues in your kitchen are a deeply personal affair. A room that will be one of the most used (when awake!) in your home has to be easy to live with.
We have designed kitchens where colour is ruled out with a commitment to wood and Half Moon White, spaces where neutrals only are embraced. Rooms with brooding hues and perhaps a cheeky pop of yellow and kitchens where bold cupboard colours are the order of the day. It is a matter of personal taste.
Because our kitchens are made to order, the colour and wood distribution within the design is always entirely custom, which gives each kitchen its own material print, we’re imagining the finger print of a kitchen!
