The Harpenden Family Kitchen

‘Our kitchen finally works for modern family life. We spend nearly all our time here’ said our clients when interviewed by House Beautiful about the renovation of their beautiful home. The intention was for the kitchen to become the heart of the home, literally, as it connects to the living room and playroom, but also metaphorically, a nourishing core for family life.

Having grown-up with a big kitchen island in their parent’s home, our American client knew they wanted to replicate that here, creating ‘the same kind of gathering place for our family’. That really is where islands come into their own, such a versatile piece of kitchen furniture, allowing a relaxed mingling of the domestic cook whipping up a feast, with others as they do homework, craft or drink wine (not the same people!).

The kitchen being replaced was very white – wall and cupboards – and so the introduction of colour was a truly exciting part of the design stage, with the objective to create ‘a room that felt bright, warm and airy but still calm to live with’.

Midnight Blue from our Eco Colour collection inspired the brooding blue walls, whilst Raspberry was colour matched for the hallway’s dusty pink walls, part of the new extension. The wonderful stained glass front door is a nod to the designs of architect and polymath Frank Lloyd Wright, who hails from the same part of Wisconsin.

The cabinetry’s colours contrast with the wall – the pale pink Ruskin Blossom and golden Market Mustard are a balance to the darker hue. The decision to paint the ceiling white also keeps the room feeling light. A little feature we particularly enjoy in this kitchen is the Elm cupboard nestled under the stairs, it feels part of the fabric of the house.

For this home we crafted several bespoke pieces of furniture, including a window seat with storage in the playroom and shoe shelves and a coat cupboard for the hallway. Should you have furniture alongside your Pluck kitchen that you would like us to design, we are always delighted to do this!
