The Yellow Kitchen in Herne Hill

‘My sunny yellow kitchen brings me so much joy’ said our client speaking to House Beautiful magazine about this bright and bold space which we had the absolute pleasure of creating with interior designer Zoe Murphy of Stealth Design.

The impetus for this renovation was a frustration with the existing kitchen ‘it lacked storage and was too dark’ leading to a revelation that it really wasn’t great for cooking! The time came to address that and explore new layouts, including the removal of internal walls.

Of course the first impression of this room is the colours, the rich Hollingbourne Yellow of the cupboards, combined with the graphic blue and black pattern of the Domus tiles. It’s a confident statement of intent, a commitment to a hue and reflects perfectly the personality of our wonderful client – strong, vivacious and full of character!

Look beyond the colour scheme and one of the main issues we had to address in the redesign was the lack of storage in the previous kitchen. For consumables we incorporated two petite larders, and there is plenty of cupboard and drawer space, with open shelves for display and practical storage.

The peninsula means there is a worktop area that allows you to face the dining table and garden whilst prepping food.

Ideal Home described the space as ‘Tranquil and Timeless’, a place where old meets new and this is exactly what the homeowner intended to achieve saying ‘I wanted a relaxed blend of old and new, and a more streamlined space, with better storage’.

As you walk into the room, the wall of Brockwell Moss cabinets draws the eye down to the garden. The tone of the Helix Grey sits easily with the cream of the Aga. The handles are unlacquered brass (link to handles), which has a lovely aged patina. The calming and muted scheme continues until you open the larder to be greeted by a glorious pop of Market Mustard, with a stool painted Farrow and Ball’s Dutch Orange to match the interior.
