Hither Green Family Kitchen

This kitchen is a glorious cohesive juxtaposition of delicate and industrial finishes, with a concrete floor and stainless steel worktop, mixing with soft matt cabinetry and rich glazed tiles; and colour too is used to create a contrast with different shades of pink and green popping against each other.

Set in a Victorian end of terrace house in South East London, our clients were extending the room and knew early on in their renovation that they wanted a Pluck kitchen. This meant we were able to work with them to make adjustments to the final wall dimensions so the cabinetry fits seamlessly – it’s always great to be involved in a project at this stage.

The couple are keen cooks and had spent years with spice jars stored in shoe boxes, so a larder with easily accessible ingredients was amongst their top non-negotiables and remains a favourite element of the new kitchen. Elsewhere, display for a much loved ceramics collection was important so we incorporated Spoke shelves above the sink. Here also is a fluted glass cabinet, which adds a playful lightness to the design and more handy storage too.

Having a table rather than an island was a very conscious choice as our clients wanted to keep the layout of the room dynamic, with the ability to move furniture around and the patina of their vintage table gives a warmth to the room. A sofa adds a cosiness and is the perfect spot for their teenage children to relax with the dogs – the family can be in the room together doing very different activities.

Having loved the practical stainless steel worktop in their last kitchen, they opted for one here too from Cavendish Equipment, with a slimline 5 mm profile. The sink is of the same steel, which gives a lovely smooth transition with the worktop and no joins.

Speaking to Kitchens, Bedrooms & Bathrooms magazine about their project the couple summed up their feelings: ‘We didn’t want a traditional or sterile-looking kitchen, but something different and colourful that wouldn’t be out of fashion in six months…we didn’t design it for anybody else – we created it for us and we’re really happy with it’. Wonderful words.
