Materials

It’s imperative for us that Pluck cabinetry and furniture is sustainable, beautiful and practical, therefore we have carefully chosen the materials and finishes we use. We derive great pleasure from working with our clients to create delicious combinations of Pluck colours and woods, look here for some palette inspiration.

Colours

Our curated colours include warm, cooler, neutral and bold shades. We have two ranges, Eco Colours and Core Colours.
Our hues are high pressure laminates, a technical name that belies the softness of these finishes with their tactile textures and beautiful colours. Indeed, modern hpls are a far cry from their mid-century forefathers and mothers – standing on the shoulders of these design giants, these colours have the richness of painted finishes but are more durable and a joy to touch. If you associate laminate with a plastic feeling surface of yore be prepared to have those notions dispelled!

Wood

We adore the texture, pattern and character wood brings to a kitchen, but believe that use of this precious natural resource should be kept to a minimum, therefore we use veneers on our cupboard doors. We carefully arrange these to enhance the grain’s beauty whilst honouring the individual characteristics of the timber. There is real art to veneering, it is a visual and technical skill that our talented team have perfected.
We source our sustainable woods from companies that are FSC® registered for Chain of Custody and press them using a non-toxic, solvent free adhesive. The finishes we use are either water based or derived from plant oils.

Eco Colours

Our new collection of sustainable, carbon neutral hues. These matt colours are tactile, words like silken, strokeable and soft come to mind, which seems to defy the fact that these are hard, durable surfaces. We have curated a spectrum of colours that work beautifully with each other and the woods we offer.

How are they carbon neutral you might ask? Well, this material is made of paper and thermosetting resins. Scientists at Arpa Industriale spent years developing a more environmentally friendly product and a major breakthrough came when they replaced half of the petroleum derived phenol in the resin with plant based lignin. Concurrently, the FENIX factory was switched to run on 100% renewable energy. Then a Life Cycle Assessment, analysing CO2 emissions from cradle to grave, quantified the carbon footprint of the material. Based on the total quantity of square metres sold monthly, this is then offset through a carbon capture scheme – specifically at landfills where methane gas is used to generate electricity. Thus carbon neutrality is achieved.

Core Colours

A range of 16 glorious colours; these high pressure laminates have an even tone and a delicate sheen. These tough and practical hpls are manufactured by companies who place the environment at the forefront of their responsibilities. Things like the raw materials, energy consumption during production, waste and lifespan are all measured according to strict international standards and they are continually striving to produce a more sustainable product. Our spectrum includes warm, neutral and bold shades and as a homage to our hood Pluck’s colours are named after local places in and around Brixton.

Wood

We have chosen a selection of woods that work beautifully with our colour palette, each has its own distinctive character that we have tried to capture here. Like fingerprints, every tree felled has a unique pattern and marking, so these are just guidelines.

London Plane

London Plane, also known as lacewood, has a distinctive and very beautiful flecked pattern; the grain can be evocative of animal print, brushstrokes, an abstract graphic or lace. The tones of the wood are warm.

Cherry

Cherry has a rich colour tending towards pink or a darker reddish tone. This wood pairs well with cooler shades – greens and blues. The grain is subtler than that of other woods with a straight pattern punctuated by the odd undulation.

Elm

Elm typically has a large and dramatic grain and these wonderful ripples can look like zebra or tiger stripes. The wood tends to have a soft tone, with the grain in particular being marked out in darker toffee coloured lines.

Oak

Our most classic offering, Oak has the lightest shades of the woods here, with golden and pale brown undertones. The grain tends to be tightly packed with a quintessential swirling pattern.

We think these woods are exceptionally lovely, but if you have a particular passion for another type of timber do let us know.

Plywood

Our cabinets are made from plywood. Hard-wearing and sustainable it functions as an honest, solid foundation from which to begin. Our plywood supplier is FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) accredited, this includes a yearly audit by a third party who ensures things like their supply chains, labelling systems and paperwork are in order. The plywood is either FSC® or PEFC™ (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified, meaning the forests are sustainably managed.
