Edinburgh New Town Kitchen

The grandeur and drama of the Georgian architecture in this kitchen is sublime – the room’s proportions with its huge sash window, original moulding, cornices and fireplace – provide the most beautiful setting for our cabinetry and furniture. Featured in House Beautiful magazine, our lovely client was asked what she had learnt through the process of her renovations and her reply ‘create a kitchen for the way you want to live and don’t compromise – you’ll only regret it’. Sage words!

Of course the building is listed so works were all approved under strict controls and local practice Method Architecture were on hand to guide the project through meticulous planning stages. The space shows why new and old design work together; this is not about creating a kitchen from a by-gone era, our client wanted a room for entertaining whilst making the most of the Georgian glory inherent in the space.

We colour blocked the cabinetry so the soft pink of Ritzy and Brockwell Moss green make an impact without dominating and the hues bring a welcoming warmth to the room. Storage was important, so the design has plenty, including easily accessible drawers and cupboards on both sides of the island. A larder for consumables has the same pink drawers in the interior as the island, a little detail which our client says she loves.

Open shelves were a must for displaying collected treasures, so we incorporated a set of Spoke shelving above a base run of cabinets that includes a sink and dishwasher. A large fridge-freezer (another non-negotiable) sits in a run that has book shelves on the end and here cookbooks are stored.

We can imagine fantastic feasts being whipped up here and enjoyed at the table in front of that glorious window.
