Pluck colours are high pressure laminate (hpl) but this is about more than just looks, hpl is durable, practical, versatile and the colour is longer-lasting than painted finishes.
The companies from which we source hpl take sustainability seriously and have comprehensive environmental policies in place. When we press hpl in-house onto plywood we use non-toxic, solvent free adhesive.
Our carefully curated palette includes warm, neutral and bold shades. If you want a colourful kitchen, we will work with you to ensure you pick a hue that’s right for you. Fashions come and go but your kitchen will last for years, choose a colour you know you will love living with.
(As a homage to our hood Pluck’s colours are named after local places in and around Brixton.)
We adore the texture, pattern and tone wood brings to our designs, but believe that use of this precious natural resource needs to be kept to a minimum, therefore we use veneers (pressed onto birch plywood). We carefully arrange the veneers individually to enhance the grain.
We have worked with a trusted veneer supplier for many years who is FSC® and PEFC™ registered for Chain of Custody. We press our veneers using a non-toxic, solvent free adhesive. The finishes we use on our woods are either water based or derived from natural plant oils and waxes. We have chosen these products because they give a hard-wearing finish and are non-toxic in your home.
We have chosen a selection of woods that work beautifully with our colour palette, each has its own distinctive character which we have tried to capture here.
The most common tree in the capital, London plane has a rich, warm tone. It is patterned with distinctive flecks; depending on the viewer these might remind you of animal print, brushstrokes or an abstract graphic.
Elm typically has a large and dramatic grain and the ripples running through the wood are evocative of zebra stripes. The wood’s golden tones gently soften the pattern.
Ranging from pinks to greens, sweet chestnut is imbued with subtle variations of colour which come to the fore the more you study it. The wood has a soft, gentle tone and grain markings throughout.
The most traditional in our selection, cherry has a quintessential swirling wood grain and warm rich tones.
Fumed oak has a dark and brooding tone. The grain of the wood is not compromised by the fuming process (in fact some say it is enhanced), so its pattern runs throughout.
If you are looking for a bold alternative to wood we are particularly partial to natural cork which has been mixed with recycled rubber. This material is commonly used in heavy industry as an anti-vibration mat, so not only is it sustainable, it is also incredibly durable. It has a speckled texture with the black of the rubber accentuating the warm tones in the cork.
The core material of Pluck kitchen furniture is birch plywood. Hard-wearing and sustainable it functions as an honest, solid foundation from which to begin.
Our plywood supplier is FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) accredited, this includes a yearly audit by a third party who ensures things like their supply chains, labelling systems and paperwork are in order. The plywood is either FSC® or PEFC™ (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified, meaning the forests are sustainably managed.
We know that not everyone will be able to get excited about hardware, but you will open your drawers and cupboards probably thousands of times a year and the mechanism and motion you experience needs to be satisfying but also well made.
We only use hardware brands of the highest quality that are engineered to last. Not only this but the companies we source from are ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certified meaning they have internationally recognised Environmental and Energy Management Systems in place.
